A Georgia father has been charged with murder after the body of his 2-year-old son was found at a garbage facility.
The boy, J'Asiah Mitchell, was reported missing by his father on Aug. 16. He was missing for about a week before his remains were found at a landfill on Aug. 23.
East Point Police have charged his father, 23-year-old Artavious North, with malice murder, concealing the death of another and cruelty to children, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
The toddler’s body had been out in the elements for days, the outlet reported.
What did J’Asiah’s father tell police about the boy’s disappearance?
Investigators said North told police the boy was kidnapped at Aspen Woods Apartments, about nine miles southeast of Atlanta. The boy’s father said a group of armed robbers cut him off as he was leaving the apartment complex and took his son.
He was initially arrested on charges of lying to police and named a person of interest.
Court records obtained by USA TODAY also show that on Aug. 17, the East Point Police Department went to North's girlfriend’s apartment. A detective saw a firearm with an attached machine gun conversion device or MCD.
North’s girlfriend told investigators the gun was North’s and that they could take it. The firearm was eventually transferred to the DeKalb County Police Department. After inspecting the gun and doing a function test, investigators determined it worked like a machine gun.
“The on/ off switch on the back of the MCD did not function properly and based on the function test, the firearm would only operate in an automatic fashion,” court records read.
During an interview with investigators, North said he knew machine gun conversion devices turn firearms into machine guns. He said he had never fired the one police had inspected but had other guns with conversion devices attached.
He was charged with knowingly possessing a machine gun the next day, on Aug. 18.
