Tennessee Titans players voice displeasure with fans for booing Malik Willis

Tennessee Titans players weren't thrilled with the fans at Nissan Stadium who booed backup quarterback Malik Willis when he came in for a snap in the second quarter of Sunday's 28-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
The Titans (3-4) won primarily thanks to a dazzling debut from rookie passer Will Levis, who threw for 238 yards and four touchdowns, playing all but two snaps of the 67 behind center. The other two went to Willis.
Willis fumbled a high snap on his first play, which was the fourth play of the opening drive, giving possession to the Falcons, who ended up kicking a 29-yard field goal. Levis took the predominance of the snaps from there, but Willis did return for one play with roughly six minutes remaining in the first half, carrying up the middle for four yards.
When Willis trotted onto the field in place of Levis before that snap, a chorus of boos rained down from the stands. Despite the fact that Titans coach Mike Vrabel had made it clear throughout the week that Levis and Willis might rotate, the Titans faithful weren't pleased with the decision to let Willis reenter the game after his fumble.
"That left a sour taste in all of our mouths when we were hearing those boos when he came on the field," Levis said. "We’ve got to know that he’s going to be a big part for us moving forward when it comes to winning games, so let’s come correct next time as fans and treat him correctly."

Willis did not speak to the media after the game but a number of teammates stuck up for him after hearing the way Titans fans treated him.
POSSIBLE DERRICK HENRY TRADE DESTINATIONS: If star running back is dealt, where might he landed?
"For the Titans fans, us in the locker room, we don’t appreciate the boos for Malik," receiver DeAndre Hopkins said. "That’s very unfair. He’s on this team. He’s part of us and what we do. Definitely it’s not something I expect coming here. I don’t think that’s very fair for Malik."
Running back Derrick Henry added: "He’s a part of the team. He was drafted here. He’s worked as hard as he can to make it to this point and do anything he can to help this organization win. He’s a great teammate. He works his tail off each and every day to be ready and to come in and make plays. That’s all he’s trying to do.
"I understand that fans are frustrated when we lose and it’s not going the way we all planned. But we’re all frustrated. Nobody wants to win more than we do as players. We’re the ones out there trying to do the best we can to showcase and go out there and win games. To have the fans in it. We’re all a family. It doesn’t help being booed when you’re just trying to go in there and make a play."
Willis has struggled in previous appearances for the Titans. He started three games as a rookie in 2022 and failed to throw for more than 100 yards in any of them. He played well statistically in relief of regular starter Ryan Tannehill in Week 6, completing 4 of 5 passes for 74 yards and rushing three times for 17 yards, but he was also sacked four times in just two series.
Henry was on the field when the boos started. He said he was confused at first and didn't understand why fans would be booing when the Titans were driving and already had a lead. When it was clarified that fans might not have been booing Willis so much as they were booing the decision to use Willis over Levis at that point in the game, Henry still didn't think it was acceptable.
"Everybody’s entitled to how they want to feel," he said. "But at the same time when everything’s going in a great way, I don’t feel like there’s a need to boo him. We understand that they’re frustrated. We want to do everything we can to get this thing going the right way. But like I said before, Malik wants to win just as bad as everybody else on this team and in this organization and the fan base as well."
